Lars Gotrich | October 23, 2026 A folk revival only goes so far as an artist's understanding — and adaptation — of tradition. What themes and melodies spoke to the past can easily echo into the present, but come alive through the personality of its interpreter. Brìghde Chaimbeul expands the language of the Scottish smallpipes behind the Desk with a quiet, yet demonstrative presence. Chaimbeul grew up on the Isle of Skye, Scotland, speaking Gaelic and learning the Highland pipes before falling in love with the bellows-blown bagpipe she plays today. Drones are forever with this instrument, but Chaimbeul amplifies, manipulates and darkens the harmonics and frequencies of these pipe drones with effects pedals and contact mics that capture her percussive tapping on the chanter. The effect is mystic and ancient … completely transfixing. The rhythm of language permeates the songs chosen here — deeply knitting untranslatable wordplay into the drones and melodies. Chaimbeul explains that the opening title, when said in Gaelic — which roughly means "sound of drones beginning to be tuned and sound of drones almost tuned" — sounds like "the rhythm of the words sound like the pulse of drones tuning." "She Went Astray," a song found by Scottish folklorist Peigi MacRae in 1934, is awash with a tonal cluster of tidal chords by Shahzad Ismaily, who, on synths, is naturally attuned to Chaimbeul's pipes throughout this performance. When she sings on "Pìobaireachd Nan Eun," it's to mimic the sounds of birds and swans — and in concert with drones that buzz and trill, it's a musical reminder of just how sublime and unknown the animal kingdom can be. For Chaimbeul, tradition is transformative. And that's none more apparent than in this version of "Bog an Lochan." The Scottish reel has several names and a long history, yet in her ecstatic repetition and ethereal ambience, Chaimbeul opens a gateway to another dimension. Cardi B: Tiny Desk ConcertAlanté Serene | October 19, 2026
It’s rare that we have to turn people away, but when word got out that Cardi B would be at the NPR Music office, we drew one of the biggest crowds I’ve ever seen here. People from all walks of life lined up to watch one of rap’s most unfiltered stars take over the Desk. In leather pants and a power blazer, Cardi brings a humble and humorous spirit as she runs through a set packed with hits.
The haunting synths and outright confidence of “Hello” sets the tone right away. Cardi rides that energy into a reimagined “ErrTime.” Then she shifts gears for the vulnerable “Man of Your Word” and “Be Careful,” keeping her humor intact through some of her most personal material. “Change the vibes, change the vibes,” she jokes before bringing the Cardi Party back with “Up,” which slides straight into “AH HA.” To close, the rap superstar plays two pivotal songs from her catalog: “Bodak Yellow,” the breakout that started it all, and the boogaloo-heavy “I Like It.” By the end, Cardi is swinging her hips with the crowd and she leaves beaming with gratitude, handing out hugs to a few lucky audience members.

Los Tigres del Norte: Tiny Desk ConcertAs our longtime fans of Tiny Desk know, we don’t typically publish introductions for our concerts. We’ve restored the full introduction on NPR.org and here on YouTube after temporarily removing it for editorial review, acknowledging the topic shared is emotional and complex and something many listeners and newsroom staff are grappling with.
From jazz and Tejano to norteño and ska, 'El Tiny' returns with a takeover from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 for Latin Music Month.
Anamaria Sayre | October 15, 2026
There is no stage too small for Los Tigres del Norte, yet none can contain its impact. For the last 60 years, the Mexican norteño band has built a career around its communities, collecting stories from its devoted audience and spinning the struggle of Latino life into song. My dear friend and Alt.Latino co-host Felix Contreras, in a tearful introduction to this performance, sums up Los Tigres del Norte's mission best: "For as long as I can remember, these gentlemen have been giving us back our humanity."
At the Tiny Desk, Los Tigres del Norte opens with an immigrant anthem that clearly proclaims: "I didn't cross the border / The border crossed me." And in our office space, that message is hit with the same certainty as a struck guitar chord or an accordion riff. This is just one of many stories that validate the experiences of the Mexican families this band loves. But on a global scale, that role transforms: Los Tigres del Norte plays on behalf of Latin America, speaking truth to power: Somos más Americanos.

Draco Rosa: Tiny Desk ConcertFrom jazz and Tejano to norteño and ska, 'El Tiny' returns with a takeover from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 for Latin Music Month.
Felix Contreras | October 13, 2026
Draco Rosa's trajectory from '80s boy band star to enigmatic solo performer music fascinates me to no end. Behind the Desk, Rosa creates shimmering, electric guitar-driven ruminations on life and love.
After his tenure in Menudo and some solo success, Rosa went on to produce and co-write some of his former bandmate Ricky Martin's biggest pop hits, including "Livin' la Vida Loca," "She Bangs" and "The Cup of Life (La Copa de la Vida)." But it was in 1996 that Rosa released what I consider to be one of the best rock en Español albums of all time. Vagabundo spiritually hovers this Tiny Desk performance, culminating in an extended take on the title track's existential themes. Special mention must be made of Puerto Rican jazz trumpeter Charlie Sepulveda, who adds a late-career Miles Davis stamp to the song's climax.
